USA/Mid-Atlantic: Shelter Island, NY

Shelter from the Storm

Getting Here

By Car:

From New York City and points west:
Take the Long Island Expwy. (I-495) east until it ends at exit 73 in Riverhead. Follow Rte. 58, which becomes Rte. 25. Continue on Rte. 25 more than 20 mi. east to Greenport.

In Greenport, turn right onto Sixth St. Turn left onto Wiggins St. At the end of the street, ferry traffic makes a hard right turn to enter the ferry staging area.

Drive your car onto the ferry for a 7-minute trip to Shelter Island. Follow Rte. 114 South for about 3 mi. as it zigzags down the island past two traffic circles. Continue on Rte. 114 south another 1/10 mi. past Heritage Rd. (on your right) and then turn left into the front entrance of Mashomack Preserve.

Ferries leave every 10 to 20 minutes daily, from early morning till late evening. No reservations are accepted. For ferry information, call the North Ferry Co. at 631-749-0139, or go to northferry.com.
